Mr. Raymond Mak
Co-founder and CEO, Farmacy HK
MBA, 2017
In a concrete jungle like Hong Kong, Raymond Mak (MBA 2017)’s vision is radical: green spaces aren’t luxuries—they’re lifelines. By merging agri-tech with education, he is planting seeds of curiosity and responsibility.
Who says farming is just for farmers? In a city where skyscrapers dominate the skyline, Raymond Mak (MBA 2017), Co-founder and CEO of Farmacy HK, is on a mission to change that. With a bold vision, innovative technology, and entrepreneurial spirit, Raymond is pioneering a greener future in the concrete jungle.
A Fresh Take on Urban Farming
Farmacy HK, established in 2018, is a local agricultural technology company using cloud-based platforms to control smart agricultural systems. As Asia’s first “Agri-Prop” tech pioneer, Farmacy HK turns underutilized spaces into productive green hubs, proving sustainability thrives even in concrete jungles. Raymond and his team are dedicated to realising the vision of ‘promoting a green new normal, smart urban agriculture and safe fresh quality.’
Harnessing Technology: Farming Without Limits
At the heart of Farmacy HK’s operations is the innovative “Farm Lab” located in Cyberport. This living showcase of cloud-based farming has greens growing vertically, using 90% less water than traditional farming methods. These modular farms fit seamlessly into restaurants, schools, and businesses, offering a sustainable solution for cities grappling with food security. By minimizing reliance on imported produce, they’re also significantly reducing carbon footprints—a vital step for Hong Kong, where over 90% of its food is imported.
Most recently, Farmacy HK’s latest venture – SEED by Farmacy, offers a unique seed-to-table dining experience in Cyberport. Each dish is not just a celebration of vibrant flavours, but also a testament to Farmacy HK’s commitment to a healthier planet.
Cultivating Minds and Communities
Beyond the business, Raymond is committed to creating a positive social impact. He and his team are passionate about educating the younger generation on climate change and sustainability. They’ve collaborated with various organisations to bring green technology to classrooms, fostering students’ awareness and responsibility towards the environment. Through their agricultural technology, they’re also able to provide locally grown crops to communities in need.
At HKU Business School, we take pride in being a part of Raymond’s journey. His pioneering work in sustainable urban farming truly embodies the innovative spirit and entrepreneurial mindset we aim to inspire in our students. As we look towards the future, we’re excited to see more leaders like Raymond leading the charge in building a sustainable future.
